2K Foundations x Karl Anthony Towns

With the help of NBA All-Star and 2022 3-Point Shootout Champion, Karl Anthony-Towns, Mobil1 and 2K Foundations, we unveiled a newly refurbished and redesigned basketball court in a not so lucky place.

What we did

In 2011, a tornado came through the Minnesota school Sojourner Truth Academy leaving most of their building in ruins. Instead of letting the tornado be their sob story, they turned this devastation into an opportunity to demonstrate resiliency. After receiving help, they rebuilt the school and adopted the tornado as their school mascot. The tornado no longer represents destruction but instead, overcoming a challenge.

The Minnesota Timberwolves center and power forward, Karl Anthony Towns, alongside Mobil 1 and 2K Foundations came to the rescue. KAT enlisted his friend and tattoo artist, Josh Woods to create the court’s mural, depicting the school’s triumph and resilience.

The court unveiling was part of “The Tune Up,” a program launched by Mobil 1, the official motor oil of the NBA, designed to help NBA 2K players tune up their skills and tune up communities across the United States. The launch consisted of many aspects – a speech from the Principal, a 5x5 scrimmage, performance from the drill team, games with the Timberwolves mascot Crunch, and a very special appearance by KAT himself that made the kids go wild.

The gym also saw some additional upgrades including new wall paint with a Minneapolis skyline, new backboards, wall mats, and sound baffles installed on the ceiling.
